We're just back from three nights in Fujairah at the Meridian. (Back to basics for just a moment --Fujairah is one of the 7 emirates in the UAE. Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate and the capital). The resort is right on the Indian Ocean and very scenic. There are miles of unspoiled beaches here, but building sites crop up everywhere. For the moment they may be stalled--but in a few years it will be another strip on another beach in another corner of the world...ie anywhere.
The drive there was most interesting as it took us through the emirates of Dubai, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah (literally, 'head of the tent') before getting to Fujairah. Sharjah and RAK are supposed to be much more conservative certainly than Dubai but also than Abu Dhabi. And just yesterday they announced that there are guards posted at shopping malls in RAK looking for those that are inappropriately dressed and with 'garish hair colors'....yikes! If you're under age they hold you until your parents come and sign something saying they'll look after your dress code in future. I don't know what they do if you're an adult already!!
